Labret Piercing
This was one of my favorite, but also most annoying piercings. I loved how it looked. I also loved the look on people’s faces when I squirted my drinks through the hole. All in all, a fun piercing. However, unlike all other piercings, it was not without it’s drawbacks.
For one thing, it was difficult to kiss people. I mean, I could, but any kind of French kissing is completely out of the question if you enjoy a mild amount of comfort on your gum line. The back of the ring is shaped like a disc and rubs against your gums right underneath your front teeth. (I’ve heard this rubbing action can actually cause your gumline to receed…however I can neither confirm or deny that because my gumline receeded in the spot prior to my piercing experience due to braces…braces are evil.) So if you have or ever plan to get a significant other, or simply enjoy being able to kiss someone without worrying about gum pain, this piercing may not be for you. Additionally, some of the coolest looking jewelry is overtly painful to those on the receiving end of a kiss. My favorite was a spike…my boyfriend at the time refused to take me out if I was wearing that one.
The second thing to keep in mind with this, and all facial piercings is clothing. I know what you’re thinking – I don’t wear clothing on my face. That’s true…but it’s also true that most shirts go over the face when coming on and off. This is definately not the worst as far a clothing pain is concerned, but it is something to keep in mind.
I touched on it already, but I realize I’m assuming that you have a post in your lip, rather than a ring. The reason being is that I couldn’t stand having a ring in, despite the fact that it looked wicked. It wasn’t even that it was uncomfortable resting on my top lip. The problem was wearing any kind of lipstick, chapstick, or lip gloss. It would get the ring gooey and gross (especially glosses are bad about that, and lipsticks get color everywhere – yuck). Now you may be thinking “well whatever I don’t wear any of that”. You think that…but once you have a ring there, the natural inclination is to play with it…either by pulling on it, but more likely by licking or chewing on the ring. The added saliva will dry out your lips and the cycle of trying to mosturize your lips will eventually drive you nuts. Or maybe everyone else is more complacent than I am…I suppose I am fairly fidgety. Either way, it tends to be uncomfortable even if it doesn’t drive you as nuts as it drove me.
Other than that, I really enjoyed having a labret piercing. I no longer have it, and it did leave a bit of a scar. It’s not discoloured, it’s just slighty pitted – sort of like a very large pore. It’s not unsightly and since it’s under my lip it’s not noticeable unless I pull my lip up. I suppose the fuller your bottom lip is, the better it would camaflauge the scar.
